Private Chef
When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need. - Ayurvedic Proverb
Recently in “Food Friday”…
And with that I’d like to welcome you to another “Food Friday” Post here on The UHNWI Coach Substack!
When you’re as passionate about cooking as I am you tend to forget that there are people that may not be.
I mean… call me insane but from pretty much every trip I take I tend to bring back herbs to add to my garden, spices to add to my shelf.
Since diet is so important to prolong life, thereby allowing you to enjoy your wealth longer, and with a higher quality life a signifiant part of the Full Spectrum Life Analysis parameter catalog is about diet.

So even if you’re not into cooking like I am, you still need to ensure a healthy diet, which can’t be achieved solely by ensuring quality sourcing.
I went into this in exhausting detail in my article “Trend: High Net Worth Farmers” a few weeks back, by the way.
Trend: High net-worth farmers?
Give me one good reason not to add a farm to your portfolio… You can’t! The health benefits are astronomical, and a farm almost entirely carries itself in most cases; besides offering numerous security aspects… On my way back from a 72 hour retreat, the onboarding session I do with all of my principals, I stopped by to visit another principal of mine, w…
I need you to imagine for a moment, that you have have taken all measures possible to ensure that you’re eating the best possible produce, sourced on your own farm, over which you have total control.
And I need you to imagine further that you’re on your farm, and that a huge batch of carrots has just been pulled out of the ground. That smell is great, right?
The first one is going to taste good, the second and third might also be very good. Yet there comes a point at which you’re going to be tired of the same taste, and that’s when meal preparation comes into play.
And if you shy away at the thought of spending hours in the kitchen (I get it, not everyone’s thing) you’re in a pickle because logic dictates that you’re going to have to go to a restaurant to take your meals, which annihilates all efforts undertaken to source your produce yourself.
Hiring a Private Chef?
One of the solutions to this challenge is certainly to hire a private chef to cook for you with the produce sourced on your own farm.
While you may not shy away from the costs of such a hire, considering particularly that you’ve spent a decent amount of money by adding the farm to your portfolio, there are certain ways in which you can increase the return of investment.
In one of my coaching assignments I worked with my principal to increase their longevity.
One of these was to add a farm to their portfolio, as repeatedly mentioned, and another was to purchase a restaurant because my Principals was one of those people that didn’t appreciate the kitchen.

Cost Effective Private Chef
This brings us to the cost efficiency aspect I focus on with pretty much every Principal, and the same was true here.
My Principal wasn’t frugal, yet they did seriously contemplate whether or not a private chef would actually make sense considering the high costs involved.
Initially they entertained the thought of hiring a personal chef, and put them on retainer, yet the lacking exclusivity, the possible itinerary clashes, etc. made them come back to the private chef.
We then went through different scenarios on how to hire a private chef, yet make them as cost effective as possible, which ultimately left us with the option to hire an overqualified chef for the restaurant we intend to add to their portfolio.
As if setting out to find someone to tick all of those boxes wasn’t enough, we didn’t want to forfeit the exclusivity.
If my Principal wanted a meal, they wanted a meal. Whether it was during opening-hours of the restaurant, or not.
However, by installing the private chef simultaneously as the head chef of the restaurant, we had managed to significantly cut costs.
The Hire Headache
Even before the hire caused me headaches I knew we were looking for the needle in a haystack.
The person we were looking for need to have a huge variety of skills not many bring to the table.
There were the obvious, for instance:
Kitchen skills (A private chef needs to know how to operate and maintain various kitchen equipment and tools, such as knives, mixers, food processors and ovens. They also need to follow sanitary and safety practices to ensure that the food they prepare is hygienic and safe to consume.)
Culinary skills (A private chef needs to have a broad knowledge of different cuisines, ingredients, spices, techniques and recipes. They need to be able to prepare dishes that suit the preferences, dietary needs and special requests of their clients. They also need to be creative and innovative in creating new dishes and menus.)
Business skills (A private chef needs to manage the inventory, budget and purchasing of ingredients and kitchen equipment. They also need to market their services, negotiate contracts, handle invoices and taxes, and maintain a professional reputation.
Communication skills (A private chef needs to communicate effectively with their clients, staff, suppliers and other parties involved in their work. They need to listen to feedback, understand expectations, give instructions, resolve conflicts and build rapport.)
Organisational skills (A private chef needs to plan ahead, prioritise tasks, manage time, meet deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously. They need to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and demands.)
Leadership skills (A private chef may need to lead and supervise a team of kitchen staff, such as sous chefs, cooks, assistants and servers. They need to delegate responsibilities, motivate performance, provide training and guidance, and ensure quality standards.)
And then there were the very unique requirements of my Principal… well, less them than the meticulous diet their physicians, and dieticians had developed to prolong their health for as long as humanly possible.
This meant that the communication skills mentioned above had to be put to the test every time the medical “branch” of this operation decided to iterate the diet of my Principal.
Can you imagine my persistent, nauseating headache now? ;-)
So it wasn’t only that this private chef we were looking to hire needed to have their stuff together in regards to foods, yet also need a basic medicinal background to be able to work hand-in-hand with the doctors, etc.
Should you Hire a Private Chef?
Clearly yes. You go through all that effort to stay healthy, and then try to save money on the one expense, which possible serves as the last piece of the puzzle.
Yes, excellent private chefs are hard to come by, and often need a monetary motivation to unfold their full potential (and to stimulate their flexibility like cooking for you at home one day, and on your yacht on the other side of the globe the next).
Considering the possibilities of reducing their costs in your wallet by adding them as chief of staff to your restaurant (be it part of the farm in your portfolio or elsewhere) or taking advantage of their vast skillset about food on your farm to grow in demand produce, it definitely makes even more sense.
In that sense I wish you happy cooking, which I will be doing with friends, and see you again on Monday!
My Best
