While Musk’s precise schedule is not publicized, he employs the productivity technique of “timeboxing” to optimize his time.
Yet Musk is only one of many very successful individuals who takes advantage of the benefits of time boxing.

Timeboxing involves allocating fixed blocks of time to each task in one’s schedule.
This brings two main benefits
eliminating indecision about what to work on next,
and imposing useful limitations that boost focus within each time segment.
You can manually timebox on paper, or leverage apps like 30/30 and Do Now which allow users to assign set timers to tasks.
Those with high scheduling constraints may choose to timebox tasks on a calendar, assigning start and stop times.
However, properly estimating task duration is challenging.
Humans exhibit the “planning fallacy” - picturing best-case scenarios and underestimating times.
Tracking previous tasks can provide data to inform more accurate estimates.
Additionally, splitting larger goals into sub-tasks makes each piece easier to approximate.
While interruptions often derail schedules, timeboxed days can be continually reassessed and revised.
Building in contingency time for interruptions is prudent.
Overloading days by overestimating what one can handle in a given time block is counterproductive, so realistic assessments of workload and focus requirements are necessary.
Timeboxing enhances productivity by reducing procrastination and boosting work intensity for intensive tasks.
Successful implementation requires vigilance against innate human planning biases as well as building adaptability into the schedule.
The potential benefits make this a valuable technique for optimizing scarce time.
Implementing Timeboxing
Select a scheduling system or application that facilitates timeboxing. Options include scheduling fixed time blocks directly in one's calendar or using a dedicated app like Sunsama which can automatically create calendar appointments based on task inputs and durations.
Define the tasks and projects that need to be completed, estimating the time requirements at least one day in advance. Establishing clear objectives and realistic duration estimates are key initial steps.
Formally schedule the tasks by blocking off the requisite time on your calendar, denoted with the task name and duration, similarly to a meeting appointment. For lengthy tasks, partition the time into smaller segments between 2 to 8 hours.
Each morning, verify that your calendar appointments reflect the tasks you aim to accomplish that workday. Maintaining an ongoing prioritized task list allows you to efficiently fill any open time slots.
Adhere to the predetermined schedule, working diligently within the allotted times. Upon concluding each timed segment, quickly evaluate outcomes and recalibrate time estimates for successive iterations. Refrain from extensively modifying the existing schedule and instead directly input any changes into future calendar blocks to enable end-of-day assessments of productivity.
The efficacy of timeboxing relies substantially on initially trusting your schedule's organization and minimizing deviations where viable. This facilitates focus, accountability, and continual opportunities for process improvements over time.
